Think about voiceover artists supreme Tom Kenny and you probably hear the voice of a yellow sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea.
But there’s another side to the voice of “SpongeBob SquarePants” that you might not have heard.
It’s a rocking, hopping burst of energy, on stage with his 12 piece band… singing tributes to heroes like Muddy Waters and Pinetop Perkins.
“Tom Kenny as a musician is one of the greatest rock and roll performers I’ve ever been on stage with, and that’s no lie,” says SAMMY Award Hall of Fame singer/songwriter Gary Frenay. “I’ve played gigs with him at Shifty’s over the years and he’ll be like crawling on the bar… He loved Rock and Roll. As a musician, it’s such a great experience, to have someone like that sit in with you.”

Syracuse Area Music Awards honored CNY’s favorite musicians Friday night

The Syracuse Area Music Awards honored some of the area’s favorite musicians at its awards ceremony at the Crouse Hinds Theater Friday night.
That followed a Thursday night ceremony, where the SAMMYs inducted a new class into its hall of fame, and presented the lifetime achievement award to Tom Kenny, best known as the voice of Spongebob Squarepants.
The Friday evening event featured performances from four bands: Jon Rogalia & The Swamp Boys, Letizia, The Real Raw Breed, and Tom Kenny & The Hi-Seas.

It’s one of many wild tales that comedian-filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait and “SpongeBob SquarePants” star Tom Kenny shared at the SAMMYS Hall of Fame dinner Thursday night at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Syracuse. Kenny received a Lifetime Achivement Award from the Syracuse Area Music Awards, and Goldthwait honored his lifelong friend and fellow Bishop Grimes High School graduate during the ceremony.

Watertown musician nominated for Syracuse Area Music Award

Thomas O’Riley, who professionally goes by Tommy Gunn, has been nominated for a Syracuse Area Music Award.
The Sammys, as the awards show is known, is an annual celebration of the Syracuse-area music scene. The first Sammys’ award show was held at the Landmark Theater in 1993.
Mr. O’Riley was nominated in the Best Rock Album category for his “Chulo.” It’s his fourth album.
“I feel very fortunate,” Mr. O’Riley said of the nomination. “They don’t usually come this far north.”
Mr. O’Riley, 66, moved with his family as a teenager to Fulton, where he graduated from high school in 1973. But he considers Watertown, where he now lives, as his hometown. His musical career often took him to Central New York.

Since 1993, the Syracuse Area Music Awards have been bestowed upon a wide variety of area musicians and music-industry professionals.
Founded by Frank Malfitano, then director of the historic Landmark Theatre, the awards were modeled after the Grammys or the Oscars. Like those famous awards, at the early Sammys local music professionals voted for the winners in wide number of categories and genres. In recent years, however, the awards have focused specifically on recorded work.
A committee assesses submitted CDs from more than 150 area artists, and makes nominations in 11 recording categories, from Best Jazz to Best Hip-Hop. This year, there are 47 nominees overall, which can be viewed by visiting syracuseareamusic.com.

The Syracuse Area Music Awards (SAMMYs) announced their 2022 hall of fame inductees and award nominees today, and the lineup includes a slate of talents from in and around the city.
This year’s hall of fame inductees are entertainment writer Russ Tarby, drummer Robert Tousignant, roots and blues band Los Blancos and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Stockham.
Pipe Major of the Syracuse Scottish Pipe Band and retired Liverpool High School chemistry teacher J. Avery Head will receive the music educator of the year award.
Tom Kenny, the Emmy-awarded voice of Nickelodeon character “Spongebob Squarepants,” the Ice King from “Adventure Time, multiple characters on “Rick and Morty,” and many more, will be given the SAMMY lifetime achievement award. He’s an East Syracuse native and the surprising frontman for Los Angeles-based rock-blues-R&B band Tom Kenny & The Hi-Seas.
